Iron Man Wells Bennett-Long Distance Rider

Wells Bennett was one of the original Iron Men, who along with Cannonball Baker, Roy Artley and Blick Wolter set many early Endurance Records.

In 1922 he set a Trans-Continental record on a Henderson Four, this was a truly amazing feat when you consider the conditions.   The roads were gravel, dirt and mud and to top that off they were unmarked in many areas.  Consider the fact that in 1922 many people were still using horses to do work so if you ran out of gas or oil it was not always readily available.

He rode 3400 miles in 6 days 15 hours and 13 minutes.  The ride was from Las Angeles to new York City, quite a ride even today.  Now get this, he was on a stock 80 inch motorcycle with no chase crew on primitive roads, adverse conditions and no back up rider.  He did it for the most part alone.

He beat Cannonball Bakers previous record by 7 hours and 39 minutes.  These men were riding from Canada to Mexico in the Three-Flag record events in 24 hours or less.   This was in the 1920's  !
